Gale's Traverse Table

In this article, We will See about Gale's Traverse Table, what is it, its image to download, PDF, Excel file, and some of it's characteristics.

Let's see,

So, What is the Gale's Traverse Table?

The traverse table in which all information is tabulated is called Gale's Traverse Table.

It consists of Length, Whole Circle Bearing, Reduced Bearing, Consecutive Coordinates, Corrected Angles, and Independent Coordinates.

When we do traversing, we have many types of information about various stations and line, like its coordinates, its length, and angles.

If we calculate each information individually, it may be troublesome or lengthy process.

To make it simple, and convenient, it is computed as in Tabular form by making it's rows and columns as a field for input of values collected from field; and for it Gale's Traverse Table is used.

Characteristics

  • This Table has various columns including Corrected Angles, Consecutive Coordinates, and Independent Coordinates.
  • It has Whole Circle Bearings columns in which we write WCB of various lines, and also as it has QB part, we can write corresponding Quadrants in respected columns.
  • It has columns of Latitude and Departure for consecutive Coordinates, in which we can calculate it using the formulas of Latitude and Departure.
  • Table also has Independent Coordinates column in which we calculate various traverse line like all points or whole traverse comes in First Quadrants.

Example Question

Below is the simple Example question to understand application of this table.

Q (1): Traverse ABCD has length of line AB = 100m, BC = 100m, CD = 100m, DA = 100m; and interior Angle at point A is 90 degrees, at point B is 90 degrees, at point C is 90 degrees, at point D is 90 degrees. Prepare Gale's Table for ABCD traverse. Is Correction required in angles?

Hint: Here's sum of angles A+B+C+D = 360 which is exact, therefore no correction required in angle. We can calculate Latitude and Departure from Quadrantal Bearing, for which we requires WCB of line AB, BC, CD, and DA.
